Volkswagen’s future electric cars will use Samsung’s batteries

Volkswagen’s future electric cars will use Samsung’s batteries

Samsung SDI has reportedly secured a deal to supply battery cells for Volkswagen's future electric vehicles. The South Korean firm will manufacture Unified Cells, the standard batteries used in Volkswagen's electric vehicles, at its Göd plant in Hungary. This is a significant win for Samsung following a recent supply deal with Mercedes-Benz.

Samsung SDI's batteries could be used in electric vehicles from Volkswagen, SEAT, and Skoda

Samsung SDI, Samsung Group's battery design and manufacturing arm, will become the third battery supplier for Volkswagen, joining China's Guoxuan and Volkswagen Group's PowerCo. Samsung SDI is reportedly modifying two production lines at its Göd Plant 1 facility to meet Volkswagen's battery cell specifications. The company has already installed the required equipment, and mass production could begin soon.

These batteries could also be used in electric vehicles from SEAT and Skoda. Volkswagen Group's electric vehicle sales reached 200,000 units in Q1 2026, down 7.7% from a year earlier, reportedly due to tariffs in the US and Chinese consumers increasingly choosing domestic EV brands.

The report claims that Samsung SDI will produce batteries with a capacity in the double-digit GWh range. Samsung SDI's plant in Hungary already manufactures batteries for BMW, Hyundai Motor Group, and Mercedes-Benz.

Volkswagen unveiled its Unified Cell design in March 2021. The standard prismatic battery is designed for use across several types of electric vehicles. It measures 256mm × 106mm × 24.8mm and features terminals on both sides. Samsung SDI has previously supplied top-terminal batteries for Volkswagen Group brands such as Audi and Porsche.
